A National Call to Celebrate the Strength, Heritage, and Self-Care of Women Who Nurture the World
As we approach the 2024 historic election with a Black woman as a viable candidate for the presidency of the United States of America, it is a time to reflect on the significant value of Black and Indigenous women. Mothers of Civilization Day, a national holiday that highlights their value, was established by Virtue Today Magazine in 2021 (mothersofcivlization.org).
More than just a historical acknowledgment, Mothers of Civilization Day is also designed as a “self-care” day for women who often put the needs of others ahead of their own. Dr. Audrey Muhammad, founder of the holiday and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., notes, “Black and Indigenous women have spent generations nurturing their families, communities, and nations. Mothers of Civilization Day is a time for them to rest, reflect, and rejuvenate. It’s a day dedicated to their wellness, as well as to their history.”
Veteran and CEO of Ackiss Virtual Management, Anitra Lane said she has celebrated Mothers of Civilization Day with other women for the past few years. As a women’s trauma advocate, she said, “Celebrating this day is so important and offers a profound moment for reflection and appreciation of the rich heritage and enduring strength of African, African-American, and Indigenous women, who came before us, who are still with us and who have played a foundational role in shaping societies across the globe.” She sees it as a day filled with celebration and empowerment and hopes other women will find joy in the day.
One of the first people to voice support for Mothers of Civilization Day was the late Dr. Ava Muhammad (May God Be Pleased with her). Dr. Ava Muhammad was a lawyer, author and inspirational speaker. Essence magazine recognized her as one of the thirty most influential Black Women in their 30th anniversary edition (2000). Her video of support can be seen here: https://youtu.be/1CS8XG7Etho?si=mGgOCzJVcBj8Kx8p
Dr. Missey Muhammad, author of the book MPower and CEO of International Consulting said, “A Mothers of Civilization Day could have a profound impact by honoring the divine role of Black women, in shaping and nurturing civilization. Recognizing this day would serve as a strong reminder of the sacredness and responsibility women carry as life-givers and educators. This day would uplift communities, affirm the value of womanhood, and inspire the next generations. The Bible teaches in Proverbs 31:25-26 (NIV):"She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue." This beautiful passage reflects the wisdom and strength that the mothers of civilization bring to our society, and our nation.
